Matthew (Matty) Kaufman grew up with three other subjects among these interviews: Phillip (Pinah) Charash, Solomon (Shlomo) Wernick and Sonia Uchin Wernick. The three boys shared their early lives together in Novye Priluki. In this interview, Matthew Kaufman recalls those days. Because Matty had an older brother, Morris, already living in the United States, he was able to leave Russia in 1912, before the First World War, the Russian Revolution and Civil War and the pogroms which devastated Priluka. Beatrice Borko Kaufman, whose interview is also in this collection, was married to Matthew's younger brother Nathan. Beatrice and Nathan joined this group of Priluka landsmen in New York City in 1923.
