Nelly was born in 1898 in Bukovina in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in Romania. Her family moved to Vienna during World War I to avoid Russians invading from the east, and stayed until the beginning of the Nazi regime. Seeing how things were changing in Europe, Nelly's father bought an estate in Palestine and Nelly, her husband and children were able to get out of Austria in time. They left Israel for the U.S. in 1959.
