Abstract

Recent developments in natural language understanding (NLU) research have given rise to pre-trained language models for contextualized word representations. XLNet, the most recent iteration of these generalized language models, advances the state-of-the-art on multiple benchmarks, outperforming its highly successful predecessor BERT on 18 of 20 language understanding tasks. Several successful attempts at adapting BERT for both extractive and abstractive text summarization have recently been proposed. In this study, we leverage XLNet for the task of extractive summarization by stacking and jointly fine-tuning a sentence-level classification layer on output representations for sentence selection. Results on the CNN/DailyMail text summarization dataset are competitive with the state-of-the-art with an architecture that has fewer trainable parameters than other approaches.

Abstract

In the past two centuries, the world has experienced radical change, ever since two superpowers, the United States and Great Britain, transformed their economy by shifting from agriculture to the production of steel and manufacturing. The resulting transformation of the global economy has raised average global temperatures by 1.4° Fahrenheit. Current climate change is alarming because as we look back into history, a similar superpower may have declined and collapsed because of the effects of the deterioration of the environment. According to scientific evidence, the Roman Empire, as mighty as it was, fell partly as a result of climate instability indicating a connection between climate instability and the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Evidence from archaeobotanical remains, tree rings, speleothems, and weather patterns suggests that climate instability in Late Antiquity correlates to the fall of Rome and the Western Roman Empire and may have served as a catalyst in this collapse. Climate instability was responsible for the migration of communities from the East that were being displaced by the Huns, a megatribe that left its territory in search of food due to megadroughts in Central Asia. These mass migrations weakened the already declining Western Roman Empire. The findings of this study therefore indicate that climate instability in Central Asia was ultimately responsible for the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. As a society, we should view the past as a cautionary tale in which we must be aware of climate instability in our world today and take action against it.

Abstract

American identity is just as evocative as it is evasive in American culture. It means something distinct to each American yet binds individuals together as a nation. Its potential to be abstract does not diminish its power as a reality of American life. The story of America is important to our survival as a nation, and calling on identity has incredible potential to compel citizens to action. In this thesis, I explore the development of American national identity both as it grew naturally and was intentionally crafted by political and cultural authorities. More broadly I consider how political and cultural authorities called upon identity in each era I explore, and how these articulations informed identity going forward. In the analytical framework as proposed by Abdelal, I consider the content of identity throughout the most formative eras of American history and the degree to which it was contested. I employ an organizing framework of analysis by considering five theories of identity, which each fluctuate in prominence in each era, and which exist in varying degrees of concert and competition. The five theories are as follows: liberalism, civic republicanism, ethnocentrism, incorporationism, and progressivism. The thesis concludes with a consideration of American identity in the 21st century and beyond.

Abstract

Throughout history and historical literature, women are typically portrayed and depicted as inferior to men. In addition, social status becomes very obvious when looking at records or other artifacts. In order to investigate the roles played by gender and social status in ancient Rome, I translated and analyzed Latin funerary inscriptions from both the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas. This allowed me to make discoveries in a genre other than elite literature. Specifically, I looked at epitaphs from Roman Spain and Italy to find connections between the language and tone in the original Latin and societal values. Using different databases from around the world, which provided physical descriptions and images of these inscriptions, I translated the Latin epitaphs into English and then analyzed them in regards to the diction, syntax, decoration, material, etc. The results show that there is a clear distinction between males and females in these inscriptions, and while there is still a distinction between varying social levels, this difference is less pronounced on inscriptions in stone.
