Abstract
While many citizens of the U.S. have a basic understanding of the civilian justice system, those not in the armed forces have a less apparent understanding of the military justice system. However, the military is a distinct social institution that has a direct impact in society from an individual, national, and global level. The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate and explain why it is both necessary and important that the military have a separate system of justice. I analyze and discuss the role of the Judge Advocate General's Corps and the military justice system through quantitative interviews with two current judge advocates and an examination of the U.S. Air Force trial docket. My results and findings suggest that the distinct nature of the military and its functions require an equally distinct system of justice and legal profession.

Abstract
The collapse of Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008 triggered negative shockwaves throughout the global economy. Nowhere were the ramifications more intensely felt than in Hungary. Hungary, a nation of ten million citizens, was one of the major success stories of the former Soviet Bloc countries. Its ability to rapidly privatize formerly state-owned enterprises and embrace democraticization enabled the nation to become the thirteenth largest recipient of foreign direct investment and convince investors from all over the world to invest their capital in Hungary.
The demise of Lehman Brothers put an abrupt end to the period of ‘easy credit’ and extensive borrowing throughout the world. It was replaced by an environment in which investors became overly conservative and shifted their capital to less risky securities. At the end of 2008, lax fiscal polices, generous social benefits, tax evasion, and the inability of the Hungarian Central Bank to operate in an independent manner drove the nation’s budget deficit to 3.8% of GDP, external debt load to 72.9% of GDP, and inflation rate to 6.1%. Additionally, the nation’s export-based economy was struggling to overcome a 7.8% unemployment rate and a mounting current account deficit. As a result of these forces, international investors and economists became concerned about a sovereign debt default and a currency crisis in Hungary.
These fears caused the economic climate in Hungary to deteriorate to such a point that it could not longer raise capital on international capital markets. On November 6, 2008, Hungary was forced to seek a $15.7 Billion rescue package from the International Monetary Fund. In addition, Hungarians became so dissatisfied with the Government’s handling of this crisis that Prime Minster Ferenc Gyurcsany was forced to resign on March 21, 2009
This thesis will trace some of the central origins and causes of the economic turmoil in Hungary from both a microeconomic and macroeconomic perspective. Ultimately, it will explain why the outcome of the sovereign debt crisis in Hungary, a non-Eurozone nation, was so much different from that in comparable countries, including the other Eastern and Central European transition economies and Greece.

Abstract
This thesis focuses on the effects of European Union expansion on Roma populations throughout Europe. The EU instituted a number of policies intended to help European Roma, one of the most persecuted minority groups on the continent, but rather than significantly improving quality of life for this population, in many places relations between Roma and greater European society have worsened. I introduce the topic by reviewing the legal frameworks created for this purpose, and discussing existing literature that examines the pitfalls of EU Roma policies.
Next, I argue that through europeanization and profit-oriented migration policies, the EU has furthered the marginalization of Roma across Europe and created an atmosphere unsympathetic to Roma issues. I analyze the identity frame of Roma promoted by europeanization, which allows states and EU administrative bodies to divert responsibility for helping Roma populations. I then illustrate the ways in which EU migration policy sidelines impoverished groups in favor of skilled workers. This practice disproportionately harms Roma migrants, who commonly work within the scope of the informal economy, and allows for expulsions and other discriminatory practices to persist. I conclude my argument by reiterating the ways in which EU Roma policy has had the opposite of its intended effect, and suggest ways to correct the deficiencies of current measures.

Abstract
The rapidly changing dynamism of the 21st century has left democratic institutions in shambles as populists rise to power and, arguably, threaten to undermine the very fabric of the democratic way of life through increasingly exclusionary politics. The prominence of populist leaders and re-emergence of ethnonationalism demonstrates a shortcoming of many representative democracies, their elites' ability to adequately represent the masses. In this paper, I will argue that recent trends in the decline of democracy can be partially attributed to a lack of democratic legitimacy that has been caused by a failure to intentionally account for demographic diversity in the elites-masses compromise that underpins representative democracies. Furthermore, I will argue that the majoritarian notion of representation is not sufficient to represent the demographic composition of multicultural democracies and suggest a mixed regime that provides for greater descriptive representation of minorities in national politics.

My project is a translation from Latin to English of a Jesuit correspondence written in 1626 reporting the status of a Syrian mission to propagate Christianity. It was composed by Gaspar Maniglier and Jean Stella, the first two Jesuit fathers to be sent to the Middle East on a mission. This letter represents how the Jesuits navigated through uncharted territory, and it lends an invaluable perspective on their new lives, in which they forged amicable and hostile relationships, and faced many other challenges from naval warfare to excommunication. In this edition, I have completed a short historical and methodological introduction, a typed transcription from the manuscript, an English translation including relevant footnotes, and a list of abbreviations used by the author. My goal is to provide a reader without any knowledge about Middle Eastern Jesuit missions with an understanding of this document as its own entity through a clear, readable translation and accompanying notes.

Abstract
This essay examines the challenges that the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS, pose to the contemporary state system. The rise of ISIS in the territories of Iraq and Syria raises two fundamental questions, one conceptual the other directly political: First, ISIS's claim to be a state and world powers' resistance to this claim raises the question of what constitutes a state in today's international system. Second, as a unique form of political organization that has become successful in the Middle East in a relatively short time, ISIS raises a number of practical political questions such as, what it takes to defeat ISIS or, at least, to prevent it from spreading further around the region and world. The essay outlines the specific inner workings of ISIS and attempts to offer possible long-term solutions to the problems that ISIS has given rise to. I argue that a political organization can be considered a state only if it has territorial sovereignty, legitimacy, and international recognition. With this template, ISIS is much closer to being a state than any other terror network before it, but falls short of meeting all the necessary requirements for statehood. Because of this, the international community must deal with ISIS in a new and different manner compared to past strategies with groups such as al-Qaeda.

Abstract
This thesis serves to analyze the evolution of women in the intelligence community arguing that the role of women has transformed from one of a sexual nature into one of strong leadership. Early sources portray the female spy as a sexual object using her body to covertly gather intelligence through the disguise of a stereotypical woman. Women hid behind their socially accepted roles as housewives or nurses. Using a mix of primary and secondary sources including the declassified CIA Typist to Trailblazer document collection as well as sources of spy fiction this thesis identifies the factors that inhibited the advancement of women in the intelligence community. Following the creation of the CIA women comprised eighty-six percent of the clerical work force but very few women filled professional roles. As traditional gender norms gave way to discussions of women's equality new opportunities for women were created. Gender stereotypes lack of education and lack of military training had inhibited women from progressing from clerical roles to professional roles within the Agency. The 1991 Glass Ceiling Study Summary identified that the number of women in the workforce had increased to forty percent; however only nine percent of the Senior Intelligence Service were women. Systematic barriers prevented women from advancing to leadership positions. The exceptional women that first entered the intelligence community were pioneers for the subsequent generations of women. Today women are commended for their work within the intelligence community. This research has shown that the CIA once named the "Old Boys' Club" is no longer dominated by men. Modern spy fiction has adapted to more accurately portray the female spy as a strong leader who can balance motherhood and a career. Women have forced change within the intelligence community simultaneously constructing the most diverse and vigorous intelligence communities to date. The evolution of women in intelligence has transformed the fictional portrayal of the female spy. This thesis with analyze the relationship between fact and fiction in the portrayal of women in intelligence.
