Abstract

The photographs, many taken in the Capital Region, focus on their observations of the natural world.

Abstract

This exhibit catalog is the culmination of a generous multi-year grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), which is funded by the Mellon Foundation. The grant provided funds for the Schaffer Library at Union College to arrange, describe, and make accessible the archives of citizen activists John S. Apperson, Jr. and Paul Schaefer, whose work is featured in the exhibit. The roots of our national wilderness system, signed into law as the 1964 Wilderness Act by President Lyndon Johnson, run deep in the Adirondacks. Created in 1885 and constitutionally protected in 1894, the Adirondack Forest Preserve was the first wilderness area in the U.S. to be set aside as open space where resource extraction was prohibited. The vigilance and perseverance of environmental activists such as Apperson and Schaefer played a vital role in saving wilderness lands and preserving them for the future. The materials in this catalog are a sampling of the legacy of Schaefer and Apperson.

Abstract

One of the most enigmatic concepts in tick-borne disease ecology is how to identify the prior host of a questing tick. The ability to do so would provide predictions to directly aid in controlling the spread of the many tick-borne pathogens, including the bacterial spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease in humans. We explored the application of a novel technique, stable isotope analysis (SIA), to identify the most recent host in molted Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick). The common reservoir and feeding host, Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mice; n=46), were trapped, infested with nymphal ticks, and fed restricted diets, simulating feeding guilds, to confirm previous findings regarding the temporal enrichment of δ13C and δ15N in molted adults. Over a feeding period of up to seven days, δ13C was found to be significantly higher in molted ticks that fed on animals on a corn diet than wild (p=0.014), standard (p=0.013), and meat diets (p=0.002), but was not significantly different in δ15N (Tukey HSD). To directly test the feasibility of SIA to identify prior hosts, we used isotopic data from multiple years of research to generate a k-means cluster analysis model using isotopic signatures from ticks fed on standard-fed and wild-fed hosts, organized by both feeding guild and species. We then tested the model using field-collected ticks. Seventy-two percent of field-collected ticks fell into the model's five 95% confidence ellipses. We propose the potential application of SIA to the identification of a prior host in questing ticks as an alternative or enhancement to DNA-based methods in the trophic ecology of tick-borne diseases.

Abstract

For years the American public school system has educated children in hopes of becoming the future leaders of this country and the world. However, schools for a long time have perpetuated racism even after over half a century after the passing of the critical Brown v. Board of Education. While some students know that challenging themselves academically, by taking advanced courses offered in their schools is particularly advantageous in college admissions. On the other hand, other students are marginalized and do not have this awareness and are in a constant state of deficiency. This is due to what Pierre Bourdieu calls 'cultural capital' and the student's ability to use their own non-financial assets to navigate social relations and hierarchies in the school. Unfortunately, since this capital is contextual, African American students are often subjected to the lack of capital and are faced with an uphill battle to attempt to bridge the gap between them and their white peers. This dissonance in performance is by no means due to students' inabilities, but rather a stigmatization, which completely alienates African American students in a way that reverts to the days prior to Brown v. Board. While there is no one solution to this issue, it must be acknowledged if the gap between white and black students has any possibility of being bridged.

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated that the magnitude and duration of the acoustic startle response can be modulated by a number of psychological factors. Mindfulness meditation, being a form of mental training known to produce benefits in affect and attention regulation as well as other domains, may modulate factors of the acoustic startle response. The present study investigated participants' skin conductance responses to an acoustic startle stimulus before and after an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course, and paired this assessment with self-reported trait mindfulness and positive and negative affect. There was significant startle habituation across the intervention, but no between groups differences on startle magnitude. Self-report measurement yielded significant increases in negative affect for the control group, and significant increases in trait mindfulness for the MBSR group, but this did not relate to changes in startle magnitude. Importantly, it was found that MBSR participants tended to be significantly more likely than controls to report mindful breathing at the post-intervention startle trial. Although startle magnitude was not significantly affected by MBSR enrollment, behavior during the startle trial may have been significantly affected.
