Abstract
Ultraviolet filter chemicals (UVFCs) are used in sunscreen products to protect skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Entering through direct and indirect inputs, UVFCs have been detected in water bodies and biota, raising inquiry into their environmental fate and toxicity. A commonly used UVFC is octyl dimethyl para-aminobenzoic acid (OD-PABA), which attenuates the sun’s rays but has shown susceptibility to photodegradation. Its photochemical instability results in the formation of numerous degradation products. Currently, two de-methylated products and one methylated product have been identified, along with evidence of possible dimerization and the possible formation of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Methods have been developed to separate and isolate the degradation products from a photolysis mixture by high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The structures of these degradation products have been investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The cellular toxicity of OD-PABA and PABA has been investigated. Understanding the environmental fate and toxicity of OD-PABA and its photodegradation products will lead to more informed decisions about its use and regulation in sunscreens.

Abstract
The present study assessed the impact ultra thin models in the media have on women’s mood and the difference in vulnerability to the thin ideal based on personality type. A sample of 80 female undergraduates were assessed on levels of self-monitoring and were then randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Subjects in the first condition were exposed to 13 advertisements containing ultra thin models. Subjects in the second condition were exposed to the same 13 advertisements containing the same models of a heavier weight. Those in the third condition were exposed to the same 13 advertisements exhibiting only the product/brand. Mood was assessed immediately after exposure using a 46 item mood adjective checklist. An additional recall survey was given to the subjects to remain consistent with the cover story.
Results showed that there was a significant difference in mood depending on condition. Subjects exposed to the thin ideal had the lowest mean score in the happy factor, and highest mean score in the annoyed factor. There was no difference, however, in the mood scores of high and low self-monitors across any of the three conditions. Thus, the overall findings show that exposure to the thin ideal causes a decrease in women’s mood, and neither high nor low self-monitors appear more or less vulnerable to the thin ideal.

Abstract
Sports violence has received increased attention in the media recently and more individuals are becoming aware of dangerous behaviors in sports. This study was designed to look at the effects of personal variables and past participation in sport in how they affect an individual's perception of aggressive sports acts. The perception aggression is important to understanding why sports aggression is more accepted in different groups of people. This utilized Union College students, who took a version of the Sport Behavior Inventory in an online survey. Through the use of different indices of data, a test of means and a multi-variable regression was performed. It was found that individuals involved in contact sports, and to a lesser extent team sports, were more likely to perceive aggression as acceptable. Personal characteristics like age and sex played no significant role. These findings can then be used to influence sports policy and raise awareness to the impacts of past sport experiences.

Abstract
Some researchers speculate memory systems are adaptations that arose to enable the storage of survival related information. Supporting this view, information processed for survival relevance and death relevance has been shown to produce a memory advantage that is superior to deep processing control conditions. While these procedures increase recall, the information retrieved is not necessarily accurate. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of survival processing and death processing on the formation of false memories. In addition, through analyses of cumulative recall curves the extent of relational and item-specific processing was examined to explore the proximate mechanisms underlying the effects.
Participants were placed into a survival, death, moving, or pleasantness condition. They were instructed to rate lists of words, which have been shown to produce false memories, for their relevance to the given scenarios. It was predicted that if death processing and survival processing are related, then participants would recall a similar number of list items and false memories. Although not significant, analyses of the surprise memory task revealed the survival condition had the highest numerical recall of list items, while the death condition had the lowest. The death condition significantly differed from the other conditions by producing the highest recall of false memories. The survival condition did not lead to an increase in false memories. Overall, the results suggest survival and dying scenarios do not share similar underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Sexual objectification (SO) is an omnipresent experience for women that decreases their quality of life. Researching why SO occurs and is perpetuated can help us understand how to decrease the interpersonal, mental health, and safety consequences women face from being sexually objectified. This presentation looks at sexual objectification through the lenses of two different disciplines: psychology and classics. The psychology component involved an empirical study aimed at better comprehending women's perceptions of their own SO and the connection SO has to Greek life. Nineteen men from Union College completed two scales to assess their direct and indirect SO of women, and 83 women from Union College reported their perceptions of college men's SO of women and their own experiences of sexual objectification. Results indicate that as a woman's experiences of SO increases, so does the degree to which she thinks the average college man sexually objectifies women. The results also demonstrate that women think men sexually objectify women more than men actually report. No connection to Greek life was found. The classics component entailed an examination of Ovid's <em>Ars Amatoria, </em>an Ancient Roman elegy on dating written around 1 BC. Analyzing <em>Ars Amatoria</em> can help us better understand how SO of women occurs today. Ovid promulgated active and passive gender roles, impossible hypocritical standards, violence, and misogyny. Using modern SO theory and research, we can gain insight into the often-forgotten experience ancient Roman women had. Although written in a vastly different culture and society than today, <em>Ars Amatoria</em> is still relevant to a modern audience and can inform our understanding of SO.

Abstract
Becoming the first U.S. state to provide direct funding and administrative support for work relief to its cities, counties and townships; with the creation of the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration in November of 1931, New York took its first steps in what would become a long tradition of work relief in the state. However, existing academic examinations of work relief in upstate New York in large part ignore activities in the state's upstate region in favor of higher profile operations in New York City. This thesis attempts to chart the rise and developmental trajectory of work relief in upstate New York between the years of 1931 and 1943.
To accomplish this task, this report examines the genesis of New York work relief under the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration, expansion under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, and maturation under the Works Progress Administration. The investigation of these agencies has revealed that work relief in upstate New York during the Great Depression operated through a continuum of programs, spanning from the establishment of the New York State TERA in late September of 1931 to the discontinuation of the WPA in June of 1943. In the upstate region, between late 1935 and 1938 the WPA built on legacies established by the TERA, FERA, and Civil Works Administration in order to orchestrate a substantial shift of unemployed individuals from local relief rolls to federally funded, locally sponsored work projects tailored to the specific needs of the region's municipalities and unemployed populations. However, the ultimate success of the Administration in the upstate area was sacrificed by federal budgetary cuts and regulations over the course of 1938 and 1939 which, resulting in the reversal of positive trends established in 1936, and sparking discontent among relief populations in the state's large industrial communities. Despite a renaissance in the WPA's activities in the early 1940's, the result of increased military production stemming from World War II, the impact of work relief operations in upstate New York remain mixed.
As they operated in upstate New York, work programs were highly successful in the facilitation of diverse projects and programs flexible enough to provide appropriate employment opportunities and socially useful projects to the varied agricultural and industrial communities of the upstate district. On the other hand, each of the TERA, FERA and WPA proved unable to completely address the volume of relief needed across the region, with many of the area's largest cities in 1940 financially unable to supply federally required financial contributions in order to continue participation in the WPA.

Abstract
This study investigates the connection between self-monitoring and cognitive dissonance as moderated by the number of people present when projecting counter-attitudinal beliefs. Subjects were asked to complete Snyder's (1974) Self-Monitoring Scale and write a counter-attitudinal essay about Union College's academic calendar. Participants in either of the two experimental conditions- sessions run with either three (condition 2) or six (condition 3) participants— were led to believe that their essay could be chosen to be read aloud to the rest of the group. Participants in the control condition were told their essays would remain confidential. Lastly, all participants filled out a campus issues questionnaire to assess attitude change concerning the school's academic calendar. It was hypothesized that high self-monitoring individuals would experience more dissonance in the experimental conditions while low self-monitoring individuals would experience more dissonance in the control condition. Contrary to the hypothesis, the pattern of means suggested that low self-monitoring individuals experienced more dissonance than high self-monitoring individuals in the two experimental conditions.

Abstract
Previous research on the personality characteristic of self-monitoring has shown that high self-monitors constantly adjust their behavior to fit their environment while low self-monitors follow internal cues to keep their attitudes and behaviors consistent with one another. Theory of Mind is a person's ability to connect unobservable mental and emotional states to one's self and others, while understanding that other people may have different thoughts, attitudes and beliefs than one's self that guides their behaviors. The current research examined a possible connection between self-monitoring and theory of mind. Participants completed a self-monitoring scale and two tasks evaluating their theory of mind. Participants who were high self-monitors had more correct answers on theory of mind tasks than participants who were low self-monitors. Low self-monitors showed more theory of mind deficits than high self-monitors, suggesting that high self-monitors have more intact theory of minds. The research therefore provides evidence of a previously unknown connection between self-monitoring and theory of mind that may be an explanation for individual differences in self-monitoring.

Abstract
Recently, researchers have found that survival processing enhances retention. This led the authors to speculate that our memory systems have been fine tuned to remember survival relevant information. One question that might be asked is what is it about thinking about one's survival that aids memory? As an extension of my previous research, this project examines the extent to which death and disgust influence recall in survival processing scenarios, determining whether or not death and disgust play a role in the memory enhancement associated with survival processing scenarios. There are four conditions in this study differing in the amount of death and disgust involved in each of the scenarios. The results of the study showed that there was no difference in retention between the four conditions, including the control condition. While a manipulation check determined that death and disgust was adequately manipulated, the recall results showed no effect of death and disgust on memory. This leads me to tentatively conclude that death and disgust is not one of the mechanisms responsible for the memory improvement seen in survival research.

Abstract
Previous research surrounding birth order suggests that firstborn children tend to display higher levels of academic achievement than later born siblings. My research aimed to assess whether birth order is associated with Baumrind's (1971) parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, neglectful), with the inclusion of two measures of helicopter parenting (overprotective, over-involved parenting). The measures of helicopter parenting utilized were by LeMoyne & Buchanan (2011) and Schiffrin et al. (2014). My study explored how this potential association between birth order and parenting may mediate outcomes for college students, such as academic performance and party habits. 121 Union College students completed the questionnaire online. Unexpectedly, birth order did not correlate with any of the four traditional parenting styles. However, also unexpectedly, birth order negatively correlated with both helicopter parenting measures and the autonomy support measure, with firstborns reporting more helicopter parenting and more autonomy support than later borns. As hypothesized, birth order was positively correlated with the number of days students reported partying per week, such that later borns reported partying on more days than firstborns. These findings suggest that helicopter parenting and autonomy granting are not mutually exclusive, and parents are perceived to be providing both to their firstborn children more so than their later born children.

Abstract
This study investigated the association between television exposure and disordered eating, with an emphasis on the potential moderating effects of self-monitoring and thin-ideal internalization. Minimal research has explored the relationship between self-monitoring and eating disorders, and no previous studies have examined the correlation between self-monitoring and the thin-ideal. A sample of 116 female undergraduate students completed measures of self-monitoring, disordered eating, thin-ideal internalization, media exposure, and diet and exercise behaviors. It was hypothesized that high self-monitors, who are more attuned to social cues and appropriateness of behavior, would be more likely than low self-monitors to internalize the thin-ideal. Since thin-ideal internalization is deemed necessary for the manifestation of harmful dieting behaviors, high self-monitors were expected to show more signs of disordered eating. This relationship was expected to be stronger for those who reported watching thin-ideal genres of television than those who watched thin-neutral genres of television. Further, high self-monitors were expected to exercise more frequently, and begin to notice weight, diet, and count calories at earlier ages than low self-monitors. As expected, self-monitoring predicted the degree of internalization and symptoms of disordered eating. These outcome variables were strongly correlated. Self-monitoring was positively correlated with frequency of exercise. The role of media and the relationships between self-monitoring and diet-related behaviors remain unclear. These findings help to identify the qualities that place some girls at higher risk of developing maladaptive responses to exposure to thin-ideal media.

Abstract
The image of a unified home front of individuals and communities who rallied their efforts for a patriotic cause during World War Two is a widely held popular belief, supported by some scholars. This thesis examines the validity of the claim and whether or not mobilization efforts were a natural disposition for many Americans. Did citizens join together and engage in grass roots mobilization to strengthen the home front or merely act in their own self interest and only take substantial action when put under pressure by the government? The study relies on the records of the New York State War Council, specifically of the Office of Civilian Mobilization (OCM), which was responsible for establishing volunteer programs on the home front.
The records reveal that the Office strenuously put forth efforts to push the localities to do more, increased its control over the counties' and cities' war efforts, and eventually conducted programs on its own. A great effort on the state Office's part was required to get the majority of New Yorkers to serve their communities on the terms set out by the organization. In some counties, such as Schenectady, local war councils were effective in stimulating volunteer efforts. However, Schenectady was more of an exception because it head-started many of its programs prior to state intervention. Participation in New York State mobilization efforts was therefore quite irregular and the war did not galvanize patriotism to the extent that was popularized by earlier sources.
The OCM's efforts also reveal the central role that women played in the efforts to mobilize home front volunteers due to numbers that participated in their programs, specifically as Block Leaders. In deciding to volunteer instead of join the labor force, many women chose the "traditional" avenue for serving the war effort. This fact also demonstrates that the war helped to maintain instead the conventional attitude about women and their place in society.

Abstract
In 2007, J.S Nairne, S.R Thompson and J. N. S. Pandeirada investigated the idea that memory systems might have evolved in order to help us remember fitness-relevant information, especially relevant to our own survival. They showed that retention of words rated for their relevance to survival is superior to any other deep processing condition like pleasantness, imagery, self-referential processing, and so on. Since then, many experiments have investigated this "survival processing" effect. Recently, a retention benefit for subjects being primed about thinking of their own death has also been found (Hart & Burns, 2011). I present an experiment that looks at the effect of a combination of survival processing and death priming to determine if they are both caused by the same mechanism or if they are two completely different entities acting to benefit retention. The experiment consisted of subjects rating a list of words for their relevance to survival (or pleasantness) after answering a questionnaire about death or dental pain. I was able to recreate the survival processing effect and the mortality salience effect separately. Results also suggest that the mortality salience effect is due to an increase in item-specific processing. Lastly, when the two processes were combined, no additional retention beyond that produced by survival processing alone was found, suggesting that the mortality salience effect might be a component of the survival processing effect.

AJES is a peer-reviewed journal jointly produced through a collaborative partnership of the Adirondack Research Consortium and Union College. It exists to foster a dialogue about the broad range of issues that concern or relate to the Adirondacks and Northern Forest. AJES serves to bridge the gaps among academic disciplines and among researchers and practitioners devoted to understanding and promoting the development of sustainable communities, both human and wild. The journal purposefully avoids serving as a vehicle for any single or special point of view. To the contrary, AJES welcomes contributions representing a variety and a broad spectrum of perspectives.
