Abstract

The goal for this project was to study bislugs using micro-PIV techniques. A bislug is "a slug made up of two different fluids that is self propelled due to surface tension forces" [1]. Bislugs of Ethylene glycol and Silicone Oil 1CST were produced in KIMAX-51® Glass channels size 1.5-1.8100mm and square cross section glass micro-channels size 1mm1mm. The cleaning method from ASTM D 2274 [13] , was used to clean the glass micro-channels before use. Images and videos of bislugs were captured on Stephen J. Potter lab’s Davis 7.2.1 program and the Imager Intense La Vision camera. The average speed of a bislug was calculated to be about 4.351 mm/s. Ethylene Glycol was successfully seeded with Duke Scientific Corp. Red Fluorescent Polymer microspheres with a diameter of 7 ?m, and bislugs were produced with the seeded fluid. An experimental set up for the PIV experiment was constructed; however, PIV data was not yet taken.

Using liquid crystals to measure shear stress in cells

Abstract

Cellular stresses are involved in many di erent processes such as wound healing and em- broyonic development. Currently, measuring cellular stresses is di cult and uncommon. Mea- surements of stress are usually taken indirectly by measuring strain which is related to stress using a linear relationship. Biological tissues, however, do not follow common stress strain rela- tionships complicating using this common technique. Previous research has shown that liquid crystals can be used to directly measure shear stresses. Other research suggests that certain types shear sensitive liquid crystals are non toxic to live cells. The goal of this project was to investigate using liquid crystals to directly measure shear stresses in live cells. Preliminary research involved investigating simple techniques, such as sim- ple spreading, to add liquid crystals to live cell cultures in hopes of measuring cellular stresses. However, issues with liquid crystals being hydrophobic pushed the research to investigate using partially exposed liquid crystals embedded in a polystyrene matrix. Various mixtures were created containing dissolved liquid crystals and polystyrene. These mixtures were then sprayed onto glass cover slides to be a substratum for cellular growth. Also, they were placed into custom made ow chambers to be calibrated for color changes resulting from shear stresses. The results of the experiment revealed that the partially exposed polymer dispersed liquid crystals were insensitive to shear stresses. However, the cells did grow on the arti cial sub- stratum with embedded liquid crystals. Therefore, a methodology has been created which can be used to embed materials or substances in a polystyrene matrix on which cells grow.. This provides the foundation for future research into using liquid crystals to measure shear stresses and provides a method for growing cells in the presence of various substances that need to be embedded in a solid matrix.

Abstract

Bi-slugs are fluid entities involving two dissimilar fluids that move "on their own" due to differences in surface tension. At the micro-fluidic scale this sort of motion may be useful to efficiently transport small quantities of fluid from place to place. This study uses Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry (µ-PIV) techniques to investigate self propelling bi-slug flows. The bi-slugs examined are made of ethylene glycol and Xiameter PMX-200 Silicone Fluid (5cst and 10cst) and placed in a glass micro-channel of approximately 1mm diameter. The Reynolds number (Re) range considered (based on ethylene glycol in the slug) is 2.54 - 1.07 and the capillary number (Ca) range is 1.23x10-3 - 5.18x10-4. In particular, we are interested in the flow field in the region near the interfacial meniscus, and the shear forces along the micro-channel. Quantitative velocity field images and streamline images of the silicon fluid in motion are shown. To the best of the author's knowledge these µ-PIV measurements are the first such measurements made in self propelling bi-slugs. In addition to the velocity field results, methods for creating self propelling bi-slugs, and issues related to the challenges of achieving adequate seeding of the ethylene glycol and silicone fluid with dyed micro-spheres will be presented.

Abstract

This thesis will discuss how the genre of Young Adult (YA) fiction, more specifically Fantasy YA fiction, reflects the major goals and objectives of fourth wave feminism, ultimately arguing for the need for more intersectional representation in heroine characters. YA Fantasy fiction consistently features a strong heroine in both spirit and body, one who uses weapons to take on systems of injustice in their respective worlds, from systematic child murder to modern slavery. What and how, then, are these books teaching the next generation about feminism? I attempt to answer this question with this thesis, looking at three YA female protagonists and their individual methods of literally and figuratively fighting against the patriarchy. I explore their relationships with weapons and fighting in general, paying attention to the use of designated instruments as weapons and the implications of this relationship on these characters. To do this, I will employ the theoretical framework of Object Relations and its notable theorists, including Melanie Klein, D.W Winnicott, Jessica Benjamin, and Nancy Chodorow, examining the connections between the heroine's sense of self, their childhood, and the object world around them. Further, I examine the use of the female body as a weapon itself, therefore requiring me to think about the significance of weaponizing the female body given the historical reality of sexual violence as a powerful bodily weapon. When put into conversation with the goals of fourth wave feminism, I will ultimately conclude that YA Fantasy fiction aligns with fourth wave feminism in its goal of female empowerment through equality but is lacking in the field of intersectional representation.

Abstract

The rising obesity rates have been constantly discussed in the media, academia, science, and society in the United States; from root causes and possible solutions to effects on individual health and the health of our nation. In my thesis, I focus on the social and economic causes of obesity, especially on the food environment in the United States. My ultimate goal is to effectively argue that obesity a problem rooted in society, often caused by factors such as the price of food, the availability of food, and the mass marketing of food to both children and adults.
