Abstract

The Easter Rising of 1916 and subsequent Anglo-Irish War were two seminal events in contemporary Irish history, and are especially pertinent as the 100th anniversary of the Rising approaches this year. In this thesis, I examine the underlying causes of the Easter Rising, specifically the growing influence of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and an increase in Irish Nationalism. I then trace the planning, preparation, and execution of the Easter Rising, which was not a popular uprising, but rather an armed insurrection led by a small group of militarized radicals. I also analyze the political, social, and economic consequences of the failed Rising, which inevitably led to a continuation of hostilities during the Anglo-Irish War, one of the earliest recorded instances of urban and rural guerrilla warfare. Finally, I examine the tactics used by the Irish Republican Army during the Anglo-Irish War, which enabled them to best a better trained, better equipped, and professional military force through the use of highly refined guerrilla tactics and the growing support of the Irish population. This study utilizes numerous oral histories collected by the Irish Bureau of Military History, published memoirs of notable figures from the Republican movement, archived newspaper articles, and other historical publications to construct a narrative of the events as seen through the eyes of the participants. Careful analysis of this narrative deconstructs the chain of 3 events, and seeks to further explain how such wanton acts of violence occurred in a Western, modern, and industrialized state. The results of the Anglo-Irish War continue to have direct political effects today, as some small terrorist groups in Northern Ireland continue to claim lineage from, or at least the namesake of, the group founded by Irish Nationalists in 1913 and reorganized by the Dáil Eireann in 1919. An understanding of the historical context behind this group is necessary to fully grasp the contemporary political situation, and explain the bulk of 20th Century Irish history, especially "The Troubles" of Northern Ireland.

Abstract

In the eighteenth century British colonies there existed a duality of freedom, in which salutary neglect facilitated economic opportunism in the form of the slave trade. This paper examines how the colony of Rhode Island was a microcosm of this freedom duality in the merchant capitalist world. The colony became the epicenter of the slave trade in British North America, while also the home to a fervent abolition movement headed by the Quakers. This thesis contends that broad economic and individual freedoms in the colony created the environment where the slave trade prospered, the exact opposite of freedom. After the introduction and literature review this thesis examines the Rhode Island political economy of the eighteenth century, focusing on the role of slavery, slave trading, and abolition movement. Chapter two utilizes primary sources such as historical records, letters, and laws to explain the development and economics behind the trade. Chapter three uses Quaker records and colonial history to show the development of the abolition movement and the impact of the revolution on the colony. Finally chapter four delves into the Brown family of Providence, showing how as a family they were a microcosm of the colony. Exemplifying both the slave trading side and the abolitionist side, the family was at the apex of Rhode Island's greatest moral crisis.

Abstract

The modern explosion of M&A activity in the United States has generated significant controversy and advocates both for and against hospital consolidation have been quite vocal in presenting their cases. Using mergers and acquisitions reports from Irving Levin Associates as well as financial and quality metrics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the American Hospital Directory, this study examines the differences between consolidated and unconsolidated hospitals in terms of overall revenue and quality, in addition to prices and costs for specified diagnoses. Consolidated hospitals undergo significant changes during their transition and oftentimes operate in a manner different than that of an unconsolidated hospital, suggesting that these figures will be different on a comparisonbasis. To asses the differences between consolidated and unconsolidated hospitals, this paper uses Ordinary Least Squares regressions and three propensity score matching methods: nearest neighbor, kernel, and stratification matching. These matching methods are used to mitigate for the potential endogeneity associated with hospital M&A analysis. This study finds that hospitals which underwent M&A between 2012 and 2014 have higher revenues but lower quality, while they charge lower prices and cost less to payers for several of the presented diagnoses. To make hospital mergers and acquisitions truly efficient, consolidated hospitals should strive to increase quality while continuing to operate in a financially efficient manner.
