The field of printable electronics has been experiencing increased interest and growth to meet the demands of low-cost, flexible, and lightweight devices. From this subset of devices, graphene-based printable sensors are of specific interest due to their transparency, flexibility, biocompatibility, and high conductivity. In this research, a graphene-based ink is formulated and developed with the goal of having it exhibit characteristics that are suitable for a sensor, namely being electrically conductive, easily manufacturable, and printable through an inkjet-based printer. Based on the ink formulation methodologies presented in the journals Carbon and The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters by Parvez et al. and Secor et al., respectively, a new graphene-based conductive ink formula and process was developed in this project. To develop this ink, a water-based graphene solution was prepared with a sonication process that demonstrated stable graphene suspension and dispersion in deionized water for up to one month. Additionally, the ink was characterized by a statistical sample of particle height and particle lateral size distributions; surface tension; density; viscosity as a function of shear rate; conductivity; and theoretical inkjet printability using a variety of scientific equipment and procedures. The final product was an ink that could be easily manufactured with simple lab equipment and exhibited a desirable set of liquid properties that represent the ability to be theoretically printed but failed to reach an experimental conductivity on the scale that was achieved in the Parvez et al. and Secor et al. studies.
One country’s emission of greenhouse gases affects the rest of the world through externalities. Several international conferences have resulted in agreements aiming to hold countries accountable for reducing emission. Before 2005 there were different, antagonistic schools of thought on how to make this change. The Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997, is widely recognized as a failure to achieve this goal, partly due to this debate. The European Union had advocated for sharp reduction of emission from all countries while China, India, and Brazil claimed that this should be confined to the developed world. Their argument was that they are currently the largest developing economies, and do not want their growth to be restricted.
This paper measures the change in emissions since 1990 across 100 countries analyzing how the GDP of a country in 1990 and the change of GDP since 1990 affect the change in emissions, controlling for energy production and usage, and the change of these numbers since 1990. All data is collected from the World Bank, except oil production which is collected by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
This analysis aims to contribute to the research on the progress of limiting greenhouse gas emission and conversion to renewable energy sources. It draws attention to the relationship between emissions and GDP as major emerging market economies are likely to be the largest source of future emissions. Examining change in emissions since 1990 will allow us to see effects of economic changes on environmental issues while also tracking the progress since the less influential Kyoto Protocol and the promising Copenhagen Accord.
The 15th Mohawk Watershed Symposium offers an exciting and diverse set of presentations on water
quality, fisheries and habitats, flooding and resilience, and recreation and stewardship. The 2021-2026
Mohawk River Basin Action Agenda, our critical guiding document, focuses on conserving, preserving,
and restoring the Mohawk River Watershed while helping to manage the ecosystem services for a
sustainable future.
Much of the defining discussion by stakeholders occurs at the annual Mohawk Watershed Symposium,
and given this watershed blueprint, ongoing environmental change, and political headwinds, we see that
the challenge ahead is enormous.
Educational institutions and federal agencies - and many of our key stakeholders - are under threat. We
need to ensure that science, engineering, and sound policy decisions guide our path forward. Now more
than ever we need to redouble our efforts to advocate for clean water, fight the spread of invasive species,
implement resilient flood mitigation projects, and understand how climate change has affected and will
continue to affect almost everything in the watershed.
The support of the DEC in this effort, and the partnership between the DEC and the Symposium, has
made an enormous difference in fostering a sense of community and providing direction for watershed
investigations. Additional support from Riverkeeper and the Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy is
greatly appreciated, along with your attendance at this year’s Mohawk Watershed Symposium.
